The average automobile engine can weigh more than 150 kg before the gearbox, or other transmission elements are added. Clearly, this is a hefty weight, and you need something quite sturdy in order to hold that mechanism in place when you're driving down the road. This is why engineers design special mounting points, and your vehicle may be equipped with several. They should last a considerable amount of time, but as they endure a lot of wear and tear, failure can sometimes occur. How do you know if your engine mountings are no longer functioning as they should and what are some of the symptoms?
The Job of the Mountings
Engine mountings are not rigid devices but are designed to flex to a certain degree. They're typically made from reinforced rubber or other materials and encased in a heavy-duty steel frame. They'll be bolted on one end to the chassis and on the other to the engine block and can absorb a certain amount of movement while the motor is running.
Harsh Environment
Due to their location which is close to the road surface, these mountings will often encounter debris and will certainly need to put up with inclement weather. Still, they are designed to resist such an onslaught, but other problems can nevertheless come along.
Avoiding Damage from Oil
For example, if you have an engine oil leak, you should take care of this as soon as you can. If the oil finds its way onto the mountings and this is repeated with time, it can cause the rubber to deteriorate. This will inevitably lead to problems and tell-tale symptoms.
Early Vibrations
Some of those symptoms may involve excessive vibration. One of the primary jobs of the mounting is to deal with this vibration so you can enjoy your time behind the wheel instead. But vibration can also lead to mechanical problems as certain parts move more than intended.
Additional Symptoms
You may also suspect an issue with your mountings if you can hear a banging noise when you start the engine. In this case, the motor and gearbox assembly is shifting on that mounting as you crank it into life. Eventually, you will also start to hear noises or experience a jolt whenever you change gears, which may become even more pronounced at higher speeds or when overtaking a slow-moving vehicle.
What You Should Do
Worn engine mountings are a cause for concern as they could damage the engine's internal components or cause an accident if they were suddenly to fail altogether. Talk with your mechanic for their advice.
