While most cars and trucks on the road today are equipped with a mechanical suspension system, some vehicles use a pneumatic approach. This is a successful solution more often than not, but it can be prone to issues that may certainly need attention. If you are the owner of such a vehicle, what problems should you be aware of?
1. They're Overly Complex
Many high-end cars imported from Germany feature this type of air suspension system. Often, they are meant to be self-adjusting with the aim of providing a much smoother on-board ride, but the system is nonetheless complex and prone to malfunction.
2. You'll Need to Focus on the Compressor
One of the key problem areas is the compressor. This is supposed to prime the individual suspension bags, but it can sometimes lose its pressure or become blocked. In this case, a cable may be faulty. This could be a relatively simple fix, but at other times, the compressor itself will have to be swapped out.
It may be worth looking at the condition of the valves first, however. These are meant to be one-way valves, passing air from the compressor to the other parts of the system. If they begin to fail, they may allow the air to leak back to the compressor, causing internal damage. Just be aware that when the compressor is on the verge of shutdown, the entire vehicle will sink towards the ground and will be impossible to drive.
3. Deal with Strut Issues
If the car is only sinking towards one side, then the compressor may be okay, but one of the struts may have malfunctioned. This will typically affect only one of the four suspension struts, so it should be relatively easy to see.
4. Address Leaking Air
You may need to have a very close look at the various hoses and seals that connect parts of the system together. Some of these are designed to be flexible but may be vulnerable to damage. It may be difficult to determine if you have a leak as it is, of course, invisible, but a technician will be able to use a special leak detector to diagnose the issue quite quickly.
