What Should Prompt You To Seek Brake Repairs?

by Alexandra Obrien

Car repairs and auto servicing, in general, are essential for the efficient functioning of your vehicle. Thus, as a motorist, it is critical to keep up with the different needs of your car or you could end up dealing with the exorbitant price of replacing various components and systems or, worse yet, stranded with a stalled vehicle. And one system that is essential to your safety and that of others when on the road is the brakes. Although the brakes are designed for durability, the longevity can be compromised to an array of reasons ranging from overheating to natural wear from routine use. To ensure that that this system works efficiently, here are some symptoms of trouble that should prompt you to seek brake repairs.

Bizarre noises when you employ the brakes

All vehicles emit intrinsic sounds. And if you have had your car several months or years, you are likely familiar with how it sounds when you change gears, rev the engine, hit the brakes and more. If you begin to notice that your brakes are now making bizarre noises rather than the sounds that you are accustomed to, it is a red flag of a potential underlying problem. For example, when you start to hear squealing when the car is slowing down, it usually means that the brake pads are run-down. Driving with jeopardised brake pads will only lead to further dilapidation and they will eventually damage the entire system due to excessive heat. Another weird noise to be wary of is metal grinding on metal, which is typically indicative of friction due to lack of sufficient lubrication. Left unchecked, the metal will wear down completely and you will need to replace your brakes.

A spongy sensation when you step on the brake pedal

When your foot bears down on the brake pedal, you are supposed to feel a degree of resistance. This resistance may diminish steadily over time and by the time your brakes feel spongy underfoot, you should be worried about permanent damage. Soft brakes could be a warning sign of two different issues. Firstly, the brakes may feel spongy when the master cylinder is compromised. The second reason why your brakes may start to feel soft when you step on the pedal is when some air or moisture is trapped in the system. Spongy brakes make it harder to stop your vehicle efficiently and this increases the risk of accidents. Therefore it is critical to seek brake repairs the money you begin to feel this sensation.
