Where the Rubber Meets the Road
Between them, the engine and gearbox provide the right amount of usable power for virtually every scenario. The engine is the ultimate source of the energy, of course, which the gearbox modifies very carefully to deal with difficult conditions. Yet still, you have to be able to turn the vehicle and overcome the resistance that is posed by the surface underneath, and this is where the differential comes into its own.
Within the casing is a complicated array of gears that can translate the provided energy through a variety of different angles to the road wheels. When your vehicle is turning at a slow speed, these parts encounter some enormous lateral forces, so the parts have to be made from particularly tough metals. Furthermore, they have to be mounted in place while moving at the same time, and this calls for very intricate bearings, which in turn have to be lubricated with specially designed fluids.
Try to imagine what happens when you are doing a slow-speed 'hairpin' turn. The inside wheel has to carve a much smaller radius to the outside wheel, while both of them meet a great deal of resistance from the road surface. To overcome this, engineers design what is known as a 'limited slip' differential that permits these opposing wheels to move at different speeds. Without this, they would tend to jump from point to point rather than glide gracefully, and you would get a very rough ride indeed.
What You Can Do
You may imagine this to be quite a simple manoeuvre, as you have done it so many times, but as you can see it requires an amazing feat of engineering every time. The very least you can do, therefore, is to ensure that the internal parts are maintained well, and this means changing the differential oil as often as recommended. Otherwise, very tiny flecks of metal will build up with the passage of time and compromise the efficiency of the fluid. Eventually, they will cause metal degradation as well, and this will ultimately lead to failure.
