4WD Transmission Maintenance Tips for Newbies

by Alexandra Obrien

The thrill of off-road driving is something that any 4x4 truck owner wants to experience. However, most 4x4 truck owners, especially those residing in the city, rarely get an opportunity to experience off-road fun. If you have just acquired a 4x4 truck, then it is a good idea to take the vehicle off-road every once in a while. You will not regret the experience. That said, the rough terrain of off-road driving puts a certain level of demand on 4x4 vehicles. For this reason, it is critical to learn a thing or two about 4WD truck maintenance. This article highlights some of the primary servicing and maintenance tips of 4 wheel drive transmissions for new truck owners.

Avoid Constant Heavy Loading -- Sure, 4WD trucks have the horsepower to carry heavy loads at constant speeds. Additionally, the stature of 4WD trucks gives one the impression that the vehicle can handle weighty loads without much struggle. However, it does not mean continually loading your vehicle every time you are going on off-road trips. While the suspensions on 4WD trucks are made from sturdy material, heavy loads on off-road terrain will cause sagging. The sagging will ultimately lead to chassis damage and affect the functioning of your 4WD system. To ensure that you enjoy off-road trips for a long time, carry heavy loads occasionally, especially when off-roading.

Prioritise Cleanliness -- If you ever get a chance to mingle with fellow 4WD owners, you will realise that dirt is respectable. The muds under the chassis, sandy windscreen, or the scratches along the body of your truck communicate fun and aggression. However, the longer that dirt stays on your car, the higher the chances of transmission bearing damage. The rough texture of loose sand and dry mad is not good for the gears in the transmission system since it causes wear and tear. It is important to remember that the debris will not spare the braking system either.

Reduce Gearbox Overheating -- The amount of work that a transmission system in a 4WD truck does when off-road is significant compared to tarmac driving. Navigating through sand, mud or rocks demands a lot and leads to gearbox overheating. While it should not be a problem because 4WD trucks use heavy duty lubricant, regular fluid changes are essential to make sure that the gear system in the transmission functions optimally. When changing the fluid, it is vital to filter it with cheesecloth and look out for metal shavings that indicate tear and wear of the transmission system.
