Understanding the Importance of Auto Service: A Guide for Everyone

Auto service is critical, and without it, you can lose your car or put yourself in danger. Hi, my name is Pete, and after ignoring my brakes for too long, I was in an accident. I made it my goal to learn everything I could about the importance of car service. Regardless of how much or how little you know about cars, I hope that these blogs can help you. I plan to focus on a range of topics related to auto service and possibly some other ideas as well. This is my first blog, and I hope that you enjoy it. When I'm not writing, I work in a coffee shop during the day and part-time for a telemarketing company in the evenings. I enjoy cooking and spending time with my family.

Car Servicing | 3 Actionable Steps To Take When Your Car Overheats

by Alexandra Obrien

Finding yourself in a situation where your car overheats is common when temperatures start to soar, but it could also mean that there's an underlying problem with your engine that needs car servicing or engine reconditioning. While your dashboard temperature indicator signals the engine condition, failure to address it in time will lead to far greater damage to your car. Here are some actionable steps to undertake when your car overheats.

Check Radiator Coolant

Car engines tend to overheat when coolant levels are low, and you may start to notice steam emanating from the front of your car. When this happens, pull your car over to a safe location and turn off the engine. Open the bonnet and radiator cap once the engine has cooled down. If the coolant levels are low, you may need to take it to a car servicing company immediately to fill it up. Unless you're familiar with handling coolant liquid, it's always best to get this coolant refilled at a mechanic or servicing centre for the best results. Falling coolant levels could be because of extended intervals between every car servicing session.

Turn Off Your Air Conditioner

The air conditioner tends to put a great deal of stress on the engine, causing it to overheat when you drive for extended periods. Shutting off the air conditioner for a while will cool down your engine. You should ideally roll down your windows while the air conditioner is off, so that there is adequate circulation for everyone inside your car. If the engine stops overheating, you can put on your air conditioner once again. If you notice the problem of overheating occurring too often, then you may need to take it for car servicing to diagnose the source.

Rev The Engine When Stuck In Traffic

If you're stuck in snarly traffic and you notice the temperature gauge rising, you simply need to shift your gear into park or neutral and rev up the engine slightly. This action will make the fan speed up and the water pump. This will draw more air and liquid into the car's radiator. Increasing the liquid and air circulation through the radiator will help to cool down the engine. Keep in mind that if you're caught in too much traffic, don't speed up and hit your brakes often because braking increases the engine load and causes it to heat up. A light touch on the accelerator will reduce the load on the engine to keep it cool.

If these steps are futile and your engine doesn't seem to cool down, you will need to enlist a car servicing company to diagnose the overheating problem.
